The Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies (Repost)

Michael Shermer, "The Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies-How We Construct Beliefs and Reinforce Them as Truths" 2011 | ISBN-10: 0805091254, 1250008808 | EPUB | 400 pages | 1,5 MB Bestselling author Michael Shermer's comprehensive and provocative theory on how beliefs are born, formed, reinforced, challenged, changed, and extinguished In this work synthesizing thirty years of research, psychologist, historian of science, and the world's best-known skeptic Michael Shermer upends the traditional thinking about how humans form beliefs about the world. Simply put, beliefs come first and explanations for beliefs follow. The brain, Shermer argues, is a belief engine. From sensory data flowing in through the senses, the brain naturally begins to look for and find patterns, and then infuses those patterns with meaning. Our brains connect the dots of our world into meaningful patterns that explain why things happen, and these patterns become beliefs. Once beliefs are formed the brain begins to look for and find confirmatory evidence in support of those beliefs, which accelerates the process of reinforcing them, and round and round the process goes in a positive-feedback loop of belief confirmation. Shermer outlines the numerous cognitive tools our brains engage to reinforce our beliefs as truths. Interlaced with his theory of belief, Shermer provides countless real-world examples of how this process operates, from politics, economics, and religion to conspiracy theories, the supernatural, and the paranormal. Ultimately, he demonstrates why science is the best tool ever devised to determine whether or not a belief matches reality. filepost

Meta-Physician on Call for Better Health: Metaphysics and Medicine for Mind, Body and Spirit (repost)

Steven E. Hodes - Meta-Physician on Call for Better Health: Metaphysics and Medicine for Mind, Body and SpiritEnglish | 2007-11-30 | ISBN: 0313348391 | PDF | 172 pages | 1.27 MBSteven E. Hodes, M.D., initially trained in traditional, high-caliber medical programs that led him through graduation at the Albert Einstein Medical School and to a fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital. But many years later, he saw something vital missing in his approach to healthcare. "I was trained as a physician, not a healer...taught to view the patient as a machine suffering from some mechanical failure. My purpose was to be the best diagnostician possible," he explains. Then events occurred that opened the eyes of this now veteran physician to deep insights about the mind-body-spirit connection. That "awakening" moved him to a metaphysical view of health--a view more spiritual than religious, but still firmly grounded in science. Embracing his role as a metaphysician, he also began to see himself as a "meta-physician," or doctor transformed (meta) by this new awareness. In this book, Hodes describes his journey to becoming a "metaphysician on call." He points out profound, yet simple, observations and beliefs that affect our perception of the nature of reality--metaphysics--which, in turn, can largely affect our well-being in all senses--body, mind, and spirit. We all can and should take responsibility for our own well-being on all levels, he explains. "This book is designed to inspire us to ask our own questions, and gather our own evidence to enhance all areas of our lives and well-being, and so find healing and peace."To start download click HERE:Filepostshareflare

Structural Geology

Structural Geology By Robert J. Twiss, Eldridge M. Moores 1992 | 532 Pages | ISBN: 0716722526 | PDF | 149 MB This is one of the best books in structural geology I ever read. It covers both the brittle and ductile fields, and also includes special chapters on microstructures and rheology that are not too detailed in similar books. Nice draws and pictures, together with important bibliographic references, help the reader to understand the explanations. One thing I found very useful are the Boxes, paragraphs inside the normal chapters, where the authors treat the mathematics applied to structural geology, that is somewhat hard to understand in other books. Only negative aspect I found: there is not a paperback version available. I found the book very useful as student, during the structural geology course I've taken in both undergraduate and graduate level, but also as quick reference manual for reserach.filepost

Codes and Cryptography by Dominic Welsh (Repost)

Codes and Cryptography by Dominic Welsh (Repost) Oxford University Press | English | 1988 | ISBN: 0198532873 | 268 pages | DJVU | 1.71 MB This text unifies the concepts of information, codes and cryptography as first studied by Shannon in his seminal papers on communication and secrecy systems. The first five chapters cover the fundamental ideas of information theory, compact encoding of messages and the theory of error-correcting codes. After a discussion of mathematical models of English, there is an introduction to the classical Shannon model of cryptography. This is followed by a brief survey of those aspects of computational complexity needed for an understanding of modern cryptographic methods and the recent advances in public key cryptography, password systems and authentication techniques. Because the aim of the text is to make this exciting branch of modern applied mathematics available to readers with a variety of interests and backgrounds, the mathematical prerequisites have been kept to an absolute minimum. Problems and solutions are included.NO MIRRORS PLEASEWANT MORE? VISIT MY BLOG!FILEPOST.COM

The Age of Insight: The Quest to Understand the Unconscious in Art, Mind, and Brain, from Vienna 1900 to the Present

Eric Kandel, "The Age of Insight: The Quest to Understand the Unconscious in Art, Mind, and Brain, from Vienna 1900 to the Present"ISBN: 1400068711 | 2012 | EPUB/MOBI | 656 pages | 36 MB/38 MBA brilliant book by Nobel Prize winner Eric R. Kandel, The Age of Insight takes us to Vienna 1900, where leaders in science, medicine, and art began a revolution that changed forever how we think about the human mind—our conscious and unconscious thoughts and emotions—and how mind and brain relate to art. At the turn of the century, Vienna was the cultural capital of Europe. Artists and scientists met in glittering salons, where they freely exchanged ideas that led to revolutionary breakthroughs in psychology, brain science, literature, and art. Kandel takes us into the world of Vienna to trace, in rich and rewarding detail, the ideas and advances made then, and their enduring influence today. The Vienna School of Medicine led the way with its realization that truth lies hidden beneath the surface. That principle infused Viennese culture and strongly influenced the other pioneers of Vienna 1900. Sigmund Freud shocked the world with his insights into how our everyday unconscious aggressive and erotic desires are repressed and disguised in symbols, dreams, and behavior. Arthur Schnitzler revealed women’s unconscious sexuality in his novels through his innovative use of the interior monologue. Gustav Klimt, Oscar Kokoschka, and Egon Schiele created startlingly evocative and honest portraits that expressed unconscious lust, desire, anxiety, and the fear of death. Kandel tells the story of how these pioneers—Freud, Schnitzler, Klimt, Kokoschka, and Schiele—inspired by the Vienna School of Medicine, in turn influenced the founders of the Vienna School of Art History to ask pivotal questions such as What does the viewer bring to a work of art? How does the beholder respond to it? These questions prompted new and ongoing discoveries in psychology and brain biology, leading to revelations about how we see and perceive, how we think and feel, and how we respond to and create works of art. Kandel, one of the leading scientific thinkers of our time, places these five innovators in the context of today’s cutting-edge science and gives us a new understanding of the modernist art of Klimt, Kokoschka, and Schiele, as well as the school of thought of Freud and Schnitzler. Reinvigorating the intellectual enquiry that began in Vienna 1900, The Age of Insight is a wonderfully written, superbly researched, and beautifully illustrated book that also provides a foundation for future work in neuroscience and the humanities. It is an extraordinary book from an international leader in neuroscience and intellectual history.Visit my blog for more eBooks and Audiobooks | RSSNo mirrors pleaseDownload:EPUBFilepostMOBIFilepost
